After a decade and a half of work, the most
significant compilation of bird portraits
since Audubon is available. Wild Birds of America - The Art
of Basil Ede brings to
book form the acclaimed paintings by the world's
foremost bird portraitist. Signed by
the artist and produced in an extremely limited, numbered
edition of only 150, plus
12 artist's proofs, Ede's book is the amalgamation of elegance,
quality and artistry as
it reproduces his dramatic images
with precise detail and hand-crafted skill.
The 34
included
images highlight the only limited edition book of Ede's Wild Birds of America.
The old-world craftsmanship of fine bookmaking
merges with modern technology
of precision color reproduction to create a masterpiece of beauty in Wild
Birds of
America- The Art of Basil Ede. Metal type is set one word at a time,
pages are
individually pulled by letterpress and inspected by hand for the feel of
metal biting into
the paper. The bird plates have been laboriously printed one color
at a time for greater
depth and clarity. The binding is simply superb. Hand bound with the
double-fan
technique and enclosed in an elegant cloth drop-spine box, the book
features quarter-
leather binding with Niger goat skin specially dyed in Scotland and
Turkish marbled
paper covers designed and hand-made by internationally known paper
decorator and bookbinder Paula Marie Gourley
Each of the 34 plates included in Wild
Birds of America - The Art of Basil Ede,
was specially chosen by the artist to illustrate the grandeur and
beauty of
the
subjects. Beginning the 120 majestic pages of work are the foreword by H.R.H. The
Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh, and the preface by The Honorable Walter
Annenberg, former ambassador to the Court of Saint James.
Jack Warner, who
commissioned the Wild Birds of America series, has written the introduction to this
masterful work. The 34 dramatic, full-color images are the highlight of the book,
followed by field notes and recollections containing pencil sketches, and a section
of the
artist's thoughts about each subject. A colophon section details production
aspects and includes the press numbering and artist's signature.
